It explains how the transition to sustainability came about, not through enlightenment but through necessity. It explains how a renewed sense of community enabled people to live reasonable lives with much less energy use and much less money.

The ’setting the scene’ section starts to sketch out sustainable living in a future Diss, which is much less consumerist (lots of used and second hand goods), much more social and cultural, and much more sound environmentally.
